Huawei Mate XTs introduces second-gen tri-fold design

The Huawei Mate XTs has officially arrived as the company’s second-generation tri-fold flagship smartphone. Following the success of the Mate XT, which generated $1.3 billion in revenue, Huawei has returned with a refined device that blends familiar design elements with key upgrades. Just days before Apple’s iPhone 17 launch, Huawei has seized the spotlight with this ambitious foldable.

At its core, the Mate XTs retains the revolutionary tri-fold form factor while introducing a new chipset, refined display technology, and a higher price tag. The phone now runs on the Kirin 9020 processor, a modest improvement over the Kirin 9010 found in its predecessor. Paired with HarmonyOS 5, Huawei promises smoother performance and better efficiency.

Display and performance upgrades

The Huawei Mate XTs boasts a massive 10.2-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 3,184 x 2,232 in a 16:11 aspect ratio. It offers a peak brightness of 1,800 nits and supports a variable refresh rate between 1Hz and 90Hz, balancing smooth visuals with battery conservation. Users can also resize the display to 7.9 inches or 6.4 inches, making the device more practical for single-handed use.

Powering this flagship is the Kirin 9020, which maintains the 7nm lithography and CPU structure of its predecessor but offers incremental performance gains. Backing the chip is a 5,600mAh battery with 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging. While Huawei kept the same capacity as the first-generation model, the efficiency improvements from HarmonyOS 5 aim to optimize endurance.

Camera system and pricing

Photography remains a focus for the Huawei Mate XTs. The rear camera setup includes a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP ultrawide, and a 12MP telephoto lens with up to 5.5x lossless zoom. On the front, an 8MP selfie camera handles video calls and quick snaps. While not groundbreaking, the configuration delivers versatility for different shooting scenarios.

Huawei’s new tri-fold comes with a premium price tag. The base variant offers 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for CNY 17,999 ($2,520). A 512GB model costs CNY 19,999 ($2,800), while the top-tier 1TB version is priced at CNY 21,999 ($3,080).

The Mate XTs combines bold design with hardware refinements, pushing the boundaries of what foldables can deliver. With its large display, chipset upgrade, and powerful camera system, it positions Huawei at the forefront of the foldable race—though the steep price makes it a device reserved for premium buyers seeking innovation over affordability.
